Outdoor Recreation Programming in Boise, Idaho
This program includes pre-program orientation meetings on the Texas State University campus in the spring 2023 semester and will also include a required eight-day field trip to Boise, Idaho in July 2023.

Idaho Backpacking – Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness
This program will be primarily taught online (in June) except for a 1-week backpacking trip in July. In June, students will plan all aspects of the July backpacking trip. While planning, they will learn about risk management, outdoor programming, and expedition planning.
Field Trip
During our field trip, July 5th – 12th, we will spend time learning to fly fish while we adjust to the altitude, then we will backpack into the Frank Church Wilderness of No Return, as planned by the students, to alpine lakes and rivers to fly fish, camp, and be in nature. This course is taught in cooperation with the Texas State University - Outdoor Center.
Prerequisites: REC1330 Leisure and Outdoor Recreation.

Tuition, Fees, and the Program Fee are financial aid eligible.
TUITION & FEES: $922.08
Undergraduate Rate
3 Hour (1 Course)
PROGRAM FEE: $1,300
Includes Lodging, Transportation, Excursions, Most Meals, and Other Fees
IMPORTANT NOTE:
All university policies regarding installments, course drops, and refunds apply to all billed and paid tuition and fees. Course tuition and program fee will be billed and paid through SBS Billing and Payment.
OUTSIDE EXPENSES NOT INCLUDED IN PROGRAM FEE:
Airfare, some meals, and personal expenses are NOT included in the program fee

Is lodging included?
Yes, it will be outdoor-style accommodations.

Will I need to provide my transportation?
Transportation is provided from the Boise airport to all program sites and back to the Boise airport at the end of the program.

Is there a dress code for specific visits?
No, however, certain clothing will be recommended for the backpacking trip.

What supplies do I need?
The University will provide all backpacking and fishing equipment. Students will need to provide clothing, personal items, and an Idaho fishing license.

Will there be down time on the trip?
Yes, students will have some down time on most days of the trip.

What type of personal expenses should I budget?
You will be responsible for roughly 4 days of food. Food is included when we are on the backpacking trip aside from personal snacks. An Idaho fishing license is not included.

What is the time commitment?
The trip portion of this program is 1 week. Students will need to be in person for the duration of the trip portion.

Do I need to be a good swimmer?
Swimming is not a requirement of this program.

Participants must be accepted juniors or seniors in good academic standing.
Prerequisite: REC 1330 and REC 2335 both with grades of "C" or better or instructor approval.
Space is currently limited to up to 12 students.

Course Description
REC 4335. Outdoor Recreation Programming.
Students apply principles and procedures for developing and leading recreation programs in a variety of specialized, outdoor environments. Students will demonstrate competencies for Leave No Trace certification. Course is taught in cooperation with the Texas State University–Outdoor Center. Prerequisite: REC 1330 and REC 2335 both with grades of "C" or better or instructor approval.

Drop and Refund Policy

Course Tuition Refund
Drop Refund - Refunds for a dropped extension course are given according to university policy for regular university courses on campus. Refer to the Registrar's Web site for more information.

Program Fee Refund
Students are able to receive a refund on the Program Fee that falls within this refund schedule. This is separate from the refund deadlines associated with tuition costs.
The following policy applies to students that drop/withdraw from the course -
- 100% of the Program Fee is Refundable '45' days prior to the course start date.
- 70% of the Program Fee is Refundable '44' days prior to the course start date.
- 50% of the Program Fee is Refundable after the first start date of the course.
Students that cannot complete the program and would like to appeal the refund policy, please contact the SIA Coordinator, for more assistance. Please note: the course start date is not the first day of travel.

I receive financial aid, what does it cover?
Depending on your financial aid eligibility, it may cover tuition, fees, and the program fee. The only cost for students is the expenses in the non-program fee such as airfare, personal meals, etc.

Is Study in America similar to Education Aboard?
It is! Both programs provide a travel aspect to the course offering. Study in America focuses on domestic destinations, shorter traveling periods, and is more cost-efficient for the student.
