Archaeological Field School in San Marcos, TX

This program includes pre-program orientation meetings on the Texas State University campus in the spring 2023 semester.

Study In America Experience

Texas State University is unique because there are several important archaeological sites located on campus grounds. One of these is Spring Lake, which, in addition to the Freeman Center, is of particular importance to our understanding of how humans have lived in Texas for more than 13,000 years. Teaching an archaeological field school at this location will not only allow Texas State researchers like Dr. Smith to investigate and contribute to the archaeological record of Texas, but provide Texas State University students with a local, and thus more affordable, means to acquire field training from an accredited institution. Documentation of attending an accredited archaeological field school course is required by employers at state and government agencies and private cultural resource management firms, which employs more than 90% of professionals graduating with a BA/BS degree in Anthropology with a specialization in Archaeology. To enter the workforce, and complete the BA/BS degree in many institutions, a 6-credit field school is required for this very reason.

To be successful in the job market Texas State University students must complete an accredited field school and by offering the course right here on the university campus, we will provide them with the opportunity to meet this requirement and gain invaluable hands-on fieldwork experience without having to attend field schools conducted by other Universities around the world. The local setting will lower the costs of students’ travel, room and board, childcare, non-resident tuition at other institutions, and missing work at students’ places of employment by making afternoons, evenings, and weekends available; thus making the course more accessible to all students. The local setting will also allow Texas State University students and instructors to actively engage with the San Marcos and University communities to educate the public about cultural resources and their local heritage, encourage stewardship of cultural resources, demonstrate the University’s commitment to education, research, and cultural preservation, and advertise the University’s Archaeology and Anthropology programs as a recruitment tool. The fieldwork is highly likely to attract the attention of news organizations at the local and state level, which will serve to advertise the quality hands-on education experiences offered at Texas State University.
