Foundations of Online Course Design and Development

NOTE: Due to integration of Texas State's new learning management system and our need to redesign these programs, enrollment in the Foundations and Advanced professional development programs has been temporarily suspended.

Texas State offers 2 courses that meet SACSCOC criteria for online instructors (see table below):

  2. Advanced Online Course Design and Development (covers Foundations content and assignments)

Note: In order to spend time updating the course content based on faculty feedback, no sessions are being offered in spring 2020.

Foundations Course Description

Target Audience

Foundations of Online Course Design and Development (formerly Creating and Teaching an Online Course) is for faculty who want to teach either a hybrid course (selected in-class sessions are replaced with online instruction and assignments) or a fully online course.

All faculty, including adjunct faculty, are encouraged to apply, but we have a limited number of slots. Prior to notification of acceptance, we may contact you to clarify your needs.

Course Details

Instructors are assigned an instructional design consultant who guides their efforts as they design and develop one online lesson and the course components required for that lesson.

Faculty complete assigned readings, view recorded presentations, participate in online discussions, and submit assignments using TRACS. Instructors build a lesson in TRACS and provide and receive feedback from peers.

  • The course requires approximately 40 hours of in- and out-of-class coursework.
  • Participants meet face-to-face either on campus or online as indicated below under Schedule.
  • Participants evaluate their course design using the Texas State Best Practices Checklist.
  • A stipend of $300 is provided for faculty who attend the course sessions and successfully complete all the assignments.
  • Course capacity is 12-16 instructors per session.
  • Topics include teaching and learning online, instructional planning, building community, facilitating discussion forums, assessment strategies, copyright, evaluation, and TRACS tools required for building an online lesson.

NOTE: This is NOT a TRACS workshop. While the course will cover selected TRACS tools, the emphasis is on instructional design strategies and processes that will help you develop an effective course site that results in observable learning outcomes for your students.

Prerequisite

The course prerequisite is successful completion of the online Basic TRACS training or equivalent.

*Please note that the Foundations and Advanced Online Course Design and Development faculty development courses will be suspended after May 2019 as we prepare to integrate our new LMS system. Stay tuned for future opportunities.

The Foundations course is offered in both 2-and 5-week hybrid formats.

Attendance on the dates and times below is mandatory. Please check your calendar before applying to ensure that you do not have conflicts that you cannot reschedule.
