2016 Award for Excellence in Online Teaching

Recipients of the 2016 Award for Excellence in Online Teaching were the following. 

Dr. Pamela Willson

Dr. Pamela Willson receives the 2017 Award for Excellence in Online Teaching. Recipient

Dr. Willson earned her Ph.D. in 1999, is a Certified Nurse Educator, a Certified Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She has taught Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) for 31 years, directed Family Nurse Practitioner programs, and incorporated inter-professional telemedicine into the curriculum. She received the Award for Excellence in Online Teaching for her online course, NURS 5208: Current Issues in Advanced Practice Nursing. Dr. Willson has led inaugural nursing master’s programs in Nursing Leadership, Family Nurse Practitioners, and Nurse Education. In these roles, she has developed graduate curriculum and has served as an expert advisor for master’s student capstone research projects. Dr. Willson’s clinical-focused leadership includes Regional Texas Public Health Director, Associate Chief of Nursing Research, and Clinical Director of the Parkinson’s Disease Research, Education and Clinical Center at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. She has a program of research focused on nursing pre-licensure assessment for NCLEX-RN® and advanced practice certification, standardized testing validity, and national APRN educational testing policy. The current scholarship includes book chapters, presentations, and journal articles related to APRN practice and education.

Runner-Up

Dr. Boden-McGill joined Texas State University in 2012 and teaches leadership, professional and organization development, and practicum courses in the Department of Occupational, Workforce, and Leadership Studies (OWLS). She has designed, implemented, and administered multiple hybrid and online courses and program initiatives. She was runner-up for the Award for Excellence in Online Teaching for her online course, OCED 5360D: Leadership Development. Dr. Boden-McGill’s work has been recognized with awards such as the Distinguished Teaching Fellowship from the Academy of Teaching and Learning Excellence, Sister Cities International Award for Technology and Innovation, and Alpha Chi Favorite Professor. In service to the profession, she is a Director on the Board of the Adult Higher Education Alliance (AHEA) and is Founding Editor of the AHEA and Adult Learning in Professional Organizational and Community Settings book series.

Before joining Texas State University, Dr. Boden-McGill worked with adult students in her roles as Associate Professor and Program Coordinator for the Master of Adult Education Program at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Associate Professor and Director of the Program for Adult College Education at Friends University. 

In her spare time, she enjoys outdoor activities, live music, traveling and spending time with her family, pets, and friends.

Dr. Kevin Mooney

Runner-Up

Dr. Kevin Mooney has taught at Texas State University for twelve years. He received his Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin, where he was also Lecturer, Associate Chair for the Center for American Music, and founder of the Texas Music Oral History Project. A musicologist with interest in Texas music, his current scholarship centers on the music and career of jazz vocalist Louise Tobin. Formerly Director of the Graduate Music Program (2008-2011), Dr. Mooney teaches a wide variety of courses in music history on topics from both the cultivated and vernacular traditions as well as a course titled Women and Texas Music in the Honors College. He has taught the course for which he was named runner-up for the Award for Excellence in Online Teaching—MU 5334: Introduction to Graduate Studies in Music—in a face-to-face format for many years. He attributes the online success of this course to the quality of education he received from his instructors in the Foundations and Advanced Online Course Design and Development courses. He continues to develop his online course offerings, most recently with a music history leveling course.
